Boom Supersonic is making waves in the aviation world with its XB-1 prototype, a pivotal step toward reviving the era of supersonic passenger flights. On August 26, 2024, the sleek prototype lifted off from Mojave, California, for its second test flight, piloted by chief test pilot Tristan Brandenburg. This 15-minute journey marks a significant milestone in Boom Supersonic’s ambitious quest to redefine air travel.
The XB-1’s latest test, following its maiden flight on March 22, 2024, showcased its evolving capabilities. During this flight, the prototype achieved an altitude of 3,170 meters and a speed of 445 km/h. Key highlights included the successful retraction and extension of the landing gear, fine-tuning of maneuverability, and activation of a new digital stability system designed to enhance roll damping and control during critical stall conditions. The prototype also featured “tufting” on its right wing, a method to monitor airflow direction and force.
This test is crucial for Boom Supersonic’s broader vision: the Overture, a supersonic airliner poised to be the successor to the legendary Concorde. The Overture aims to merge speed with sustainability, boasting a design that transforms the classic sonic boom into a subtler “thump,” potentially allowing it to fly over land routes in the U.S.
Blake Scholl, Boom Supersonic’s founder and CEO, expressed his excitement about the progress: “The XB-1’s second flight was a remarkable success. We’ve addressed the challenges from our initial flight and are thrilled to continue advancing towards supersonic travel. This flight is a significant leap forward for us and for the future of passenger aviation.”
The XB-1’s test program is set to include about 10 flights, progressively exploring higher altitudes and speeds. These tests will cover all systems and ensure safety as the aircraft approaches supersonic velocities, with planned trials in the Black Mountain Supersonic Corridor at Edwards Air Force Base.
While the XB-1’s successful flight is a promising development for Boom Supersonic, the journey to bring the Overture to commercial reality remains complex.
