Apple’s iconic Mac Mini is about to undergo its most significant design overhaul in over a decade. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the next generation of Mac Mini computers will wave goodbye to the familiar USB Type-A ports, marking a bold step into the future for the compact desktop.
For the first time since 2010, the Mac Mini’s design is set for a radical transformation. The removal of the USB Type-A interface, a staple of the device’s design since its inception, signals Apple’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of modern computing. The last notable change was in 2011 when Apple phased out the DVD drive, and now, they’re taking another leap forward.
The upcoming Mac Mini is expected to feature Apple’s latest M4 processor, delivering unprecedented performance in a sleek, minimalist package. According to Gurman’s sources, the new model will be equipped with a variety of interfaces, including five USB Type-C ports—two on the front and three on the back—along with an Ethernet port, an HDMI connector, and a headphone jack. This marks the first time the Mac Mini will include front-facing ports, a change that could improve accessibility and ease of use.
Interestingly, the Mac Mini may also switch to an internal power supply, streamlining the design even further. This compact powerhouse could now be as small as an Apple TV set-top box, enhancing its appeal to those seeking a clutter-free workspace.
The decision to drop USB Type-A ports may not sit well with everyone. Many users still rely on USB Type-A for connecting peripherals like wireless mouse adapters and external drives. However, Apple has a history of leading the charge in phasing out older technologies, as seen in their other product lines.
Gurman also notes that the five USB Type-C ports may only be available in the Mac Mini Pro model with the M4 chip. It’s unclear whether the base model will share the same port configuration, as historically, the entry-level Mac Mini has offered fewer connectivity options.
As Apple prepares to launch this new iteration of the Mac Mini, it’s clear that the company is doubling down on its vision of a future dominated by USB-C and cutting-edge performance. While this may be the end of an era for the humble USB Type-A, it’s just the beginning for what promises to be the most powerful and versatile Mac Mini yet.
