In a twist of fate befitting a startup that soared high before crashing down, one of the first prototypes of Arrival’s electric van, the Gamma, is now making waves on eBay. The once-celebrated British electric vehicle startup, valued at billions, has dwindled to a mere shadow of its former self, with its assets auctioned off earlier this year.
Founded in 2015 with grand ambitions to revolutionize commercial electric transport, Arrival’s trajectory seemed unstoppable. The company envisioned a network of small-scale production facilities close to key markets, aiming to deliver cutting-edge electric vans and buses. But by March, Arrival’s fortunes took a nosedive, and bankruptcy became the reality.
The Gamma electric van, now up for grabs on eBay, is one of the last tangible remnants of Arrival’s ambitious vision. According to its current owner—who was part of the team before the company’s demise—this pre-production model stands as the only fully operational Arrival Gamma van known to exist. Acquired during the liquidation of Arrival’s assets, the van’s purchase price remains a closely guarded secret.
In its current state, the Gamma is in surprisingly good condition. The van features sliding electric doors, a touchscreen display, and shelves designed for cargo. Its owner even hints at its potential as a quirky camping vehicle. As of now, bidding has reached £5,900 (approximately $7,746), a modest sum considering the van’s unique pedigree.
Arrival’s journey began with grand promises, including a plan to replace UPS’s European and U.S. fleets with electric vans. However, despite building 25 test vehicles and attracting significant investment, the company struggled with financial instability. By January 2023, Arrival’s financial resources were nearly exhausted, forcing a shift to a narrower focus on the U.S. market and plans for electric buses and rideshare vehicles. Unfortunately, these efforts weren’t enough to stave off bankruptcy.
Arrival’s collapse hasn’t stifled the drive for greener delivery solutions. Rivian, a competitor, has secured a massive contract with Amazon to deliver 100,000 electric vans by 2030, while Ford’s all-electric E-Transit and GM’s own electric vehicle endeavors show that the quest for sustainable transport continues.
As the Gamma van finds itself on eBay, it stands as a bittersweet reminder of Arrival’s fleeting moment in the spotlight, juxtaposed against a backdrop of ongoing innovation in the electric vehicle sector.
